American White Pelicans
White pelicans behave quite differently from their brown cousins. They often soar in flocks, apparently just for the fun of it as best we can tell. This flock was over Morro Bay, CA. (11/07)
White pelicans catch their prey by swimming in a group in synchrony, first herding fish and then dredging the surface with their bills. They are often found inland on fresh water - unlike brown pelicans which are invariably seen near salt water.
