Mob at a "Bait Ball"
On the Kenai peninsula we often saw crowds of birds concentrating excitedly at a particular spot in the water. Evidently schools of fish sometimes huddle together to escape predation, creating a "bait ball" which draws hungry birds. Here, gulls, kittiwakes, and puffins are feeding at a bait ball. (8/07)
