Our last day in Tepic we decided to go on a walking tour of the city. We started out in the old mission building, now housing the state of Nayarit Tourism offices. In 1767 Fray Junípero Serra spent a year here before heading north to California. His room was open for viewing.
We collected maps and directions at the Tourist Office, and did a little shopping in a small store selling beautiful beeded (and other artifacts) made by the Huichol Indians, the indigenous people of the region.
Tepic was founded in 1542 and today has a population of just over 200,000. We liked it a lot.
